“At Alderbrook, I’m Living the Dream!” – And YOU Can Be, Too!

“At Alderbrook, I’m Living the Dream” - A Happy Alderbrook Resident!
For those of you who are enjoying retirement, or approaching it, let me
tell you what I found – just two hours from Seattle. Alderbrook Golf Club
is located at the south end of Hood Canal. This quaint little community
includes more than 325 families living around a beautiful 18-hole championship
golf course. Even better – for just $170 per month, residents get unlimited golf
for a family or two adults. There have been several times I’ve come down from
the finishing hole, looked over the 18th green to the majestic Olympic mountains
and thought to myself, “I’m living the dream.” And for half the price I’d pay
in Seattle.

I’ve learned quite a bit since I’ve been here. Like the fact that Hood Canal isn’t
really a canal at all. It’s actually a forested saltwater fjord 70 miles long, and
the water temperature rests at over 70 degrees in the summer. The surrounding
area is practically untouched and unbelievably beautiful. On any given day,
my family and I can enjoy a scenic journey along the Canal on Hwy 101.
Along the way, we find wineries, gift shops, restaurants, parks, and a whole
lot of shore to enjoy. If we’re feeling adventurous, we can hike a mountain trail,
scuba dive the octopus hole, kayak the canal, or study a tide pool.

It’s so wonderful to truly live in peace, quiet, surrounded by the breathtaking
beauty of the Pacific Northwest at it’s finest. When we get the itch for a good
dose of urban city life, it’s less than two hours away – with many ways to get there:
• Drive 29 miles to the Bremerton Ferry and take an hour boat ride into downtown
with our car.
• Drive to Port Orchard and take Hwy 16 south to the Southworth Ferry terminal.
That boat goes to Vashon Island, then on to Fauntleroy (West Seattle).
• Drive to Port Orchard and follow Hwy 16 south and across the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge to I-5.
• Drive around to the south past Shelton, through Olympia and on to I-5.
• For a trek north of Seattle, take Hwy 3 past Silverdale and take the Kingston
exit and catch the Kingston / Edmonds Ferry.
• When we want to ditch the car, we park in Bremerton and walk on the
ferry to explore Seattle by foot.
I love living on Hood Canal because the options are limitless – whether I want to
stay local or get away. Hot summer afternoons or windy winter days are perfect
for the 1.5 hour drive to Ocean Shores. Or, we can be on the northern Oregon
Coast in only 2 hours. Antiquing or gallery-hopping in Port Townsend is a great
way to spend any afternoon – only 90 minutes up Highway 101. If I need something
closer, Shelton shopping is just ten minutes away and Olympia offers larger shopping
malls, big box retailers, and an endless selection of great restaurants. But, we don’t
even have to drive far at all for five star cuisine or to celebrate special occasions.
There are a few gourmet restaurants just a couple minutes away including the Robin
Hood Restaurant & Pub and the Alderbrook Resort.

Some people think that we live in the “middle of nowhere” but I say, that I’m exactly
where I want to be. The air is clean, the water is pure, and as John Burroughs says,
“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put back in order
once more.” For me and my family, that’s what living at Alderbrook is all about.

Another Successful Year for Alderbrook’s Junior Golf Camp

Alderbrook Golf Club held its’ Junior Golf Camp again this year. Originally
scheduled to run Sunday through Tuesday, the camp was post-poned by
one day due to the major electrical storm that blew through the area on
Sunday. Camp got underway on Monday with over 40 in attendance that
were divided into two groups: ages 10 and under, and ages 11 and up.
Alderbrook’s Golf Pro Justin Gravitt and his assistants spent the first two
days on golf instruction: swing, grip, driving, putting, etc. The final day
the golfers were able to bring their grandparents along while they played a
game of golf. The camp ended with a barbecue party at the clubhouse.

Each golfer received an 8-shot sequence of photos of their golf swing to keep.
“The kids really had a good time”. – Kayrene Davis, 15th Fairway and grandmother
of Ashley, age 13, and Tyler, age 12

“The club really did a good job. The staff really catered to the kids and were
very encouraging and enthusiastic”. -Elaine Puetz, 17th Fairway and grandmother
of 5 golfers: ages 5, two 7 yr olds, 10 yrs, and 12 yrs

Seahawks Join Locals For Golf Fundraiser At Alderbrook

“It was an amazing success. We exceeded my projected estimate for how
much we would raise”. Is how Jeane Boone, coordinater of the Hood Canal
Education Foundation, described the golf tournament held at Alderbrook Golf
Course on Sunday, August 16.

36 golfers including two special idols, Michael Jackson and Alonzo Mitz, both
former Seahawks stars, participated in a golf tournament, dinner and auction
held to raise money for Hood Canal School students’ technology needs.

The Hood Canal Education Foundation (HCEF), established in 2009, is a group
of dedicated volunteers who care about the prosperity of students. It is their
job to put together fundraisers, such as this tournament, to help kids get what
they need. The Alderbrook golf tournament was one of HCEP’s first major benefits.

Head Pro at Alderbrook Golf Course, Justin Gravatt, said, “It was a great event and
fundraiser. They had good participation. Everyone was having a good time and they
are planning on making this an annual event. The Seahawks stayed for the whole
event and were very supportive of the school”.
