Day Tripping on Hood Canal
On Hood Canal, you’ll find outdoor recreation and leisure activities suited for day trips and weekend getaways that are sure to delight travelers and explorers of all ages - from the serene drive along the canal on Highway 101, to adventurous treks in the nearby wilderness or on the pristine waters. Discover a charming array of accommodations and restaurants - like Robin Hood Restaurant & Pub, as well as galleries and shops like Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop. A pair of luxurious world-class resorts also await - Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union and Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton. You can also choose from an extensive menu of recreational options the canal has to offer – and stop by Alderbrook Properties just up the hill to check out our beautiful homes while you’re at it.
Hood Canal Scenic Drive The roadway along the curved shoreline of Hood Canal offers visitors spectacular scenery and the chance to enjoy the beauty of the region without venturing too far from the comfort of your own car. Spend a relaxing afternoon cruising along U.S. Highway 101. This scenic roadway hugs the edge of the deep water fjord where Orcas occasionally visit. In places, the forest grows right to the edge of the shoreline. Nice stops en route include a visit to Hoodsport Winery, Potlatch State Park, or some of the seafood markets and gift shops in Lilliwaup and Hoodsport.
Birds, Bridge, and Boardwalk Start with a scenic drive up the Skokomish River Valley, and keep an eye out for bald eagles on the way. Your destination is High Steel Bridge - just seven miles south of Hoodsport. This 685-foot bridge is perched high above the South Fork of the Skokomish River. Over 420 feet of thin air separate the steel structure from the icy snowmelt rushing down from the slopes of the Olympic National Forest. The striking view is sure to capture the attention of photographers, thrill-seekers, and nature-lovers alike. As you make your way back to sea level, head toward State Route 106 and Union. The Skokomish Tribe offers birdwatching tours in the area. Or, stop in at Hunter Farm to try out the many local products available at this unique roadside store and working farm. From there, head north to Belfair, where Theler Wetlands sits just off Highway 3. Explore the four miles of boardwalk and well-maintained trail through alder forest and the Union River estuary along Hood Canal. Bring your binoculars, as this wetland habitat supports a plethora of wildlife, including bald eagles, blue heron, migratory birds, and lowland creatures.
Family Fun in the South End The whole family will enjoy the Squaxin Island Museum, located just south of Shelton. From there, grab lunch at one the many local restaurants or stop in at the Shelton Farmers Market. Fresh berries and produce, homemade goodies, music, arts, crafts, and more make for an excellent way to meet local folks and sample some of the area’s finest products. When the youngsters are ready for a little more action, head to Kneeland Park, near historic downtown Shelton, where a massive wooden play structure teases the imagination of kids young and old.
Lake to Summit Enjoy early morning fishing from the many rocky coves on the shores of Lake Cushman, nestled at the base of the Olympic Mountains. When the fish are done biting, head on up the road to the Mt. Elinor trailhead. This 3-mile hike to the 5944-foot summit leaves you with breathtaking views of Hood Canal, the Olympic Mountains, and the distant Cascade Range.
