Meet Alderbrook Properties Architects Roger Katz & Associates

A recognizable trademark of Alderbrook Properties is our home design/architecture which offers clients affordable, luxury living spaces that accent our Pacific Northwest surroundings. Our clients and neighbors have come to love the quality of the design, the attention to detail, and the luxury aesthetic achieved while designing homes that compliment the beautiful landscapes that surround them.

Roger Katz, owner of Roger Katz & Associates has designed five of our six home plans at Alderbrook. An architect for more than 30 years, Katz currently operates on Bainbridge Island with a team of up to ten, depending on workload - which can be anywhere from three to ten homes at any given time. Katz graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 with a degree in architecture. Since then, he’s developed a top-notch portfolio of more than 250 residences throughout the United States while owning and operating a residential contracting business where he has worked hard to develop company and architectural practice.
For Katz, inspiration comes from melding the needs and desires of his clients with the characteristics of the building site while listening carefully for the passion behind the words of his clients. “My goal is to help clients realize their dreams, not mine,” says Katz.

This approach for Alderbrook Properties means that our clients enjoy homes that echo warmth and nurturing qualities throughout, and are designed to compliment the scenic backdrops of tall evergreen trees, a beautifully landscaped golf course, snow-covered mountains, and the pristine waters of the canal.
“My inspiration comes from melding the needs and desires of the client with the characteristics of the building site,” says Katz. ”The surrounding environment determines the ultimate design. It sets the parameters of what the house will become.”

When Katz begins the design process, he welcomes input from a variety of sources and considers the site which always has a story of it’s own to tell. “I am not a purist,” says Katz, “and I enjoy drawing from different architectural styles and then combining those seemingly diverse elements into a new and pleasing whole.”
Making every effort to ensure the finished product feels like it compliments the site - as opposed to fighting with it - Katz spends alot of time listening to his clients talk about their dreams and needs in a home. “The dreams are where the passion hides, and it is the passion that excites people when they walk into a space.”
Katz says that his very best work has always been the result of staying open to input and letting the evolutionary aspect of building a house prevail. He views his job as a sort of symphony conductor - taking in all of the information and then applying his expertise in design and construction to produce a pleasing end product. ”I don’t enter any relationship with a client with a pre-determined agenda of what I think a house should look like. I remain open along the way to input from a variety of sources - in particular, from the craftsmen who are creating the house,” says Katz. ”My very best work has always been the result of staying open to input of value and allowing the evolutionary aspect of building a house to prevail. This often requires that you leave your ego at the door, and collect it on the way out as you wish your clients well in their new house.”

Though he can not choose a favorite design within the Alderbrook Properties portfolio, Katz is proud that all share the goals of superb space planning, thoughtful circulation throughout the house, intimate spaces, maximum view/light consideration, and attention to detail.
